Play! Play! Play!

I am currently teaching the Reception Class at All Saints. I believe that children learn best when they take part in new experiences and direct their own learning. Child – initiated activities produce happy, enthusiastic and motivated children, eager to discover and learn.

 

The Foundation Stage Curriculum (ages 3 – 5) advises teachers to provide an environment that is stimulating and promotes opportunities for children to engage in worthwhile structured play. Therefore children in my classroom can often be found writing in shaving foam, making number plates for the bikes or making porridge for Goldilocks.

 

One of the great things about working at All Saints is that the ethos of ‘learning through doing’ is carried on throughout the school. From pantomime visits and French mornings to Altogether Active week, the children at All Saints have experiences that will stay with them throughout their lives.

 

In my spare time (is there any?) I love to paint and my house is littered with half-finished creations. I also enjoy swimming and playing the piano when I’m not catching up with friends and family.

I have been at the school for ten years and really enjoy being part of such a friendly, caring and welcoming community, in which staff and children know everyone.  I think it is important to have a positive working environment where achievement and effort is recognised and celebrated. 

My aim is to provide lessons which are enjoyable, creative and challenging within a safe, supportive classroom. 

My interests include reading, Pilates, playing the piano, listening to music and visiting France as often as possible!

I believe that children are very precious and that their primary years are vitally important.  It is a time when attitudes are formed which will affect the rest of their lives.  My aim as a teacher is to draw on my own enthusiasm for learning to inspire a love of learning in every child and build upon individual strengths and talents.  I seek to provide a warm, caring and positive working environment where children feel valued and can learn and develop with confidence.

At All Saints' we stongly believe in providing a wide variety of opportunities where children are encouraged to develop life skills.  One way in which we achieve this in Class 5 is to participate in the Stockport Young Entrepreneurs Competition.  This is a borough wide competition in which the children establish and run their very own business.  The children are required to apply for jobs, create a product, market and advertise their product, sell it and also manage their finances.  The finale of the competition is a 'Dragons Den' style event at Stockport Town Hall where businessmen and women assess the children's business plan and profit margins.  It is a wonderful experience for the children, which inspires, challenges and motivates children about business.

In my life outside of teaching, I enjoy playing golf, going to the gym, swimming and cooking.  I also love spending time with my family and friends.

All Saints' is a friendly, happy and caring school and I feel very priviledged to work in such a thriving place.

I believe we are in a privileged position as teachers.

We have the opportunity to work with children who we support as they blossom and grow.  We are able to develop and encouraging their enquiring minds, building their self-esteem and confidence and promote their talents and gifts

During my time at All Saints’ I have taught all infant classes (Reception to Year 2) as a class teacher.  I am currently teaching throughout the school as a ‘roving teacher’ and am responsible for: releasing teachers from their class to enable them to fulfil their management and co-ordinator roles; provide intervention for targeted groups of children such as gifted & talented or those who need a boost to reach their full potential and the latest string to my bow is as a French teacher.  C'est bien, n'est-ce-pas?

Learning is fun and in my classes I foster enthusiasm and a positive culture through using aids such as Interactive White Board, practical apparatus, a range of learning styles for example ‘Talking Partners’, ‘Role Play and ‘Peer Assessment’. The children develop their emotional and social intelligence through structured opportunities across the curriculum and we celebrate success with awards such as ‘Star of the Day ’and ‘Merits’.

Most children love the opportunity to work outdoors so here at All Saint’s we make provision for this learning. As we are fortunate enough in having a large playing field plus a KS1 and KS2 playground as well as a Reception outdoor area, our pupils learning is enhanced and extended. One Reception class I taught worked with a child’s granddad in making wooden nesting boxes for birds and another for hedgehogs (using carpentry tools) which we then set up around the field enabling the children to record and monitor the wildlife that used the nests.

Providing the children with an enriched and diverse curriculum gives all pupils a chance to shine with what makes them tick, this fosters a love of learning and a sense of satisfaction. My class have participated in a Greek Day where we enjoyed the food, music and dressing up in togas.  We have taken trips out to the theatre, library, Country Park, art gallery, seaside and the airport. These visits are linked with our topic units and are extremely valuable in that they enhance learning opportunities.

In my life outside of teaching, I pursue a range of interests which include voluntary work as a Governor, activities such as rock climbing, yoga, running and being part of the ‘Great Outdoors’.  Family and friends are very special to me therefore building and maintaining relationships are a priority as I believe it gives one a sense of place and belonging.
